Abstract

Objective To study the correlation of inspiratory capacity(IC) and the quality of life in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD ). Methods The st George respiratory questionnaire(SGRQ) score, patient diary and spirometry were collected from 65 stable patients with COPD (stage Ⅱ,Ⅲ). The validity was documented by performing correlation analysis, and Pearson′s correlation coefficients were calculated. Result The correlation coefficients between the total score and the other three section scores of SGRQ were 0.887 , 0.944 and 0.970, respectively,P0.01. The four SGRQ section scores were significantly correlated with the patient′s symptom integral respectively ( 0.861 , 0.769, 0.773 and 0.835,P0.01). Also the SGRQ score were significantly correlated with forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV_1) pred, total lung capacity (TLC)pred, residual volume (RV) pred and inspiratory capacity (IC) pred (P0.05). Compared with FEV_1%pred, IC%pred was better correlation with the SGRQ score. Conclusion The spirometry results correlate with the quality of life in patients with COPD. Compared with FEV_1, IC is a better index to evaluate the quality of life in patients with COPD.
