Study on Potassium Permanganate Enhanced Chloramine Disinfection Technology

Abstract

By using bacteria and total coliforms as detection indexes and synthetic water prepared in laboratory as sample, the investigation was made on the effect on inactivation of indicator microorganism and formation rule of THMs in disinfected water by chloramines and potassium permanganate applied individually and in combination. The result shows that combined use of chloramines and potassium permanganate is more effective in inactivating indicator microorganism than individual use of the two disinfectants. The both disinfectants have synergetic action in reduction of total count of bacteria and total coliforms. Within the normal dosage of potassium permangnate (2 mg/L), combined use of the two disinfectants can further decrease THMs formation, so that the chemical and microbial safety can be improved in treated water.
