"Socialization" and "Secularization" of Taoist Immortals in the Popular Stories during the Ming and Qing Dynasties

Abstract

During the Ming and Qing dynasties,in line with the new cultivation guidelines adopted by most Taoist sects,Taoism as a whole projected even stronger tendency in Socialization and Secularization,which not only reflected the adjustments from Taoism in the face of the latest demands from the public and society,but also impacted the total image of Taoist immortals as the result.The above-mentioned tendency in Taoist cultivation theory and changes in the image of Taoist immortals were also reflected in the popular stories in the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
