Abstract

In the light of the engineering practice,the vibration control methods for civil engineering structures are presented and the new type damping systems,such as the tuned liquid and mass damper(TLMD) and the lever mass damper(LMD),are studied.The tests completed in laboratory and on bridges in the field show that the TLMD is easier to be tuned and has better vibration damping effect and durability because it takes both the advantages of the tuned mass damper(TMD) and the tuned liquid damper(TLD).The theories and laboratory tests also prove that in comparison to the existing vibration damping measures,the LMD has little adverse influence on the bridge aesthetics,is easy to be installed and maintained,has better vibration damping effect and is a kind ofbroad-spectrumdamper that is more suitable for vibration control of very long stay cables.
