Abstract

The prefix a(阿) appeared in Chinese in the late ancient times.It is related to titles.It cannot be found in the most dialects of Mandarin Chinese among which the Xianxian dialect is an exception.The function of the prefix in Xianxian is to make the abbreviation of a nick name constitute at least two syllables.The cause of its appearance is as same as the prefix a(阿) in ancient Chinese.By this analysis,we can affirm the character of the prefix a(阿) in ancient Chinese and other modern Chinese dialects.
