Species Diversity and Threatened Status of Cave-dwelling Bats in Mianyang,Sichuan

Abstract

An investigation of cave-dwelling bats was conducted in Mianyang,Sichuan Province from 1999 to 2005.A total of 14 species belonging to 5 genera,4 families were found,which was 31.8 % of all known species in Sichuan,and 11.7% of the total in China.Among the species,Rickett's big footed bat(Myotis ricketti) is endemic to China.Large mouse-eared bat (Myotis chinensis) is listed in China Species Red List as a vulnerable species(VU).Five other species,such as great evening bat(Ia io),are listed as near threatened(NT)species.Many caves have been exploited or are being exploited for tourism,which is a great threat to the survival of cave-dwelling bats. The authors think that something must be done to protect the bats roosting in these caves,and more information about bat conservation should be publicized.
