Abstract

By commenting on “An Introduction to the Cultural History of China”,this paper has discussed Qian Mu's contributions to the study of the cultural history of China.Firstly,he has established a series of humanistic cultural views and methodologies.Secondly,starting from China's geographical and climatic environments,he has probed into the course of historical development as well as the background from which Chinese culture and civilization originated.Thirdly,he has emphasized the spirit of fusion,which is basic to Chinese culture.In the comparative study of Chinese and western cultures in particular,he is not only opposed to the idea that the distinuction in the tradition and character of Chinese culture is simply that between the ancient and the present,but also to pruning Chinese culture modeling on western culture.Therefore,he has rervealed the world value and realistic significance of Chinese culture.
