CURRENT STATUS AND PERSPECTIVES OF REGIONAL SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN THE YANGTZE RIVER VALLEY

Regional sustainable development is a higher stage of regional study. It not only reflects the base of a region, but also reflects the Ievel and potential of a regiem. The Yangtze River Valley is another important eco nomic zone in China in the new century, except the costal area. The paper puts forward a new evaluating system for regional sustainable development, which includes basie system, harmony system and potentiality system. On the base of this system, the paper analyzes the situation of the regional sustainable development in the Yangtze River Valley, and compares the result with that of other regions in our country. The conclusions mainly include: the whole level of regional sustainable development doesn' t accord with its status in the national economy. And because of the great internai discrepancy and complicate environmental condition, the development of Yangtze River Valley can' t adopt the primary development modei of costal areas. It should probe into a way which can improve the harmonious development between economic growth and environmental protection. At last, the paper gives some advices on special provinces and the whole valley.
