Abstract

Confucius' On Poetry, in the form of general argument, classified argument and double argument, shows Confucius' poetic theory, which attaches importance to poetic connotation and structure, but the poetry theory in the Han Dynasty, although it was thought to be inherited from that of Confucius, was against Confucius' main purpose. It commented poetry by emphasizing ethic teaching. Zhuzi theory on poetry is accidentally identical with that of Confucius', but he had many improvements and offered many innovative views in style, poets, human nature, explanation and aesthetics, which shows he attempted to reform the Confucius theory and upgraded it to a higher level.
