Sedation under Bispectral Index Monitoring in Intensive Care Unit

Abstract

Objective To investigate the efficacy of sedation in intensive care unit under bispectral index monitoring.Methods A total of 43 patients who needed mechanical ventilation and sedation treatment were randomly divided into two groups:experiment group(E group) and control group(C group).The patients older than 75 years or younger than 14 years,or had severe liver dysfunction,lipid metabolic disorder,neurological disorder were excluded.The patients in E group were sedated under bispectral index,while C group were sedated under traditional sedation scale system.Propofol was selected to be the sedative drug.Sedation time,ventilation time,total propofol and analgesic dosage,serum triglyceride,oversedation times,unplaned extubation rate were compared between E group and C group.Results There were no difference between two groups in clinical characteristics such as age,sex and unplanned extubation rates.Compared with the C group,the sedation time and ventilation time were shortened with no statistic difference.The sedation drug dosage,oversedation rate and ICU duration were significantly reduced(P 0.05).Serum triglyceride level was significantly decreased(P 0.05),and the difference was no longer observed 12 h after sedation stopped.Conclusion Sedation under bispectral index monitoring in intensive care unit can reduce sedative drug dosage and oversedation rate,but can neither decrease the sedation and mechanical ventilation time,nor increase unplanned extubation rate,which is a safe,effective method in monitoring sedation.
