Abstract

Objective To evaluate the main factors of influencing Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma long time result and the main cause of failure. Methods The relationship between 10 year survival rate and age, sex, histological type, clinical stage and radiation doses were analysis retrospectively for 185 patients with NPC treated from 1988 to 1990 in our hospital. Results The overall 10 year survival rate (OS) was 34.6%,Ⅰ,Ⅱ,Ⅲ and Ⅳ stage were 75.0%,58.5%,37.3% and 10.5% respectively. The 10 year local relapse free survival (LRF) was 59.7% and the 10 year distant metastasis free survival (DMF) was 58.9%.The local relapse recurrence rate was 33.0% and the distant metastasis rate was 30.3%.Of the 121 patients who died, both recurrence and distant metastasis was 86.5% (105/121).The 10 year survival rate has a strong association with the clinical stage,T,N stage, age and dose but the relationship between the histological type and sex is rarely eminent. Conclusions The clinical stage was the most prognostic.Early radiotherapy is the key which can increase the survival rate. The distant metastasis and local recurrence are the main cause of failure. The optimal dose of the primary focus is 70~80 Gy.
