Abstract

By investigating the ethnic identification of the Miao intellectuals during the period of the Republic of China, the author discusses how the boundary of the Miao ethnic group, as a minority, was defined and what impact they had in the state system at that time. It then concludes that the changes of modern ethnic boundaries are closely related to the emergence of modern nation-states.
