Embolization with Onyx for treatment of cerebral arteriovenous malformation

Objective To investigate the efficiency of Onyx embolization for treatment of cerebral arteriovenous malformation(CAVM).Methods Onyx embolization was performed for treatment of 31 patients of CAVMs.The efficiency was evaluated,and 21 patients were followed up for 3—18 months.Results Among all 31 patients,vascular malformations were embolized more than 90% in 6 patients.CAVMs vanished in 4 patients after embolization,while DSA showed the malformations vanished in the other 2 patients within 3 months.Vascular malformations in 25 patients were embolized less than 90%,of which multiple embolizations alone was performed in 10 patients,post embolization surgery in 8 and irradiation in 7.Headache,swirl and epilepsy symptoms were improved in 26 patients after embolization.Three patients felt headache after surgery.Two patients followed with intracranial hemorrhage complications,and 1 of them died of bleeding 24 hours after embolization.Conclusion Onyx has good effect for endovascular embolization of CAVM and appears to be an ideal embolic material.
