Abstract
Objective To assess the effect of cigarette smoking on sperm quality and menstruation. Methods Sperm samples from 395 cigarette smokers and 202 nonsmokers were collected and examined. 304 infertile women were interviewed on their exposure to passive smoke and their menstruation. Results Male smokers had significantly decreased sperm morphology, sperm density and sperm vitality, compared with nonsmokers (P0.01, P0.05, and P0.01, respectively). Being a smoker, total smoking pack-years, and depth of inhalation were associated with decreased sperm quality. Women with passive smoking reported more dysmenorrhea. Conclusion Cigarette smoking is associated with decreased sperm quality, and women with passive smoking are more likely to have dysmenorrea.
