Abstract
Objective To study the expressions of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in gastric cancer and to explore their correlation in gastric carcinoma. Methods The expressions of COX-2 and VEGF were studied by immunohistochemistry in 53 gastric cancer specimens and 40 normal tissues as control. The microvessel density (MVD) was assayed by CD34 positive blood vessels counting. Results Expressions of COX-2 and VEGF in gastric cancer tissues were 83.0% and 84.9% respectively. The expression of COX-2 was correlated significantly with VEGF expression (P 0.05). Expressions of COX-2 and VEGF were highly correlated with TNM stage(P 0.05,P 0.05) ,lymph node metastasis(P 0.01, P 0.05) and distant metastasis (P 0.01, P 0.05). The MVD value was much higher in COX-2/VEGF double strong expression group than that in COX-2/VEGF double weak expression group (P 0.01). Conclusion COX-2 overexpression is remarkably correlated with that of VEGF and they may play an important role in tumor angiogenesis and metastasis of human gastric cancer.
