Abstract

Objective To investigate the effect of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) on the expression of GAP 43mRNA in the rats following spinal cord injury (SCI). Methods 55 Wistar rats were randomly divided into 11 groups:the normal control group;the SCI 1st day,4th day,10th day,14th day groups;and HBO 1st day,4th day,7th day,10th day,14th day groups. The rats in the SCI and HBO groups sustained SCI by a 10 g×2.5 cm impact at T 10 level. The rats of the HBO group were treated with HBO every day.Semi quantitative RT PCR was used to observe change in the expression of GAP 43mRNA. Results HBO can increase the expression of GAP 43mRNA significantly following SCI.Rate of GAP 43mRNA expression in the HBO group was significantly higher than that of the SCI group ( P 0 01). Conclusions HBO can improve the rate of GAP 43mRNA expression and promote neuron regeneration, following SCI.
