Chinese Gramma——the First Book on Chinese Grammar in the History of Russian Sinology

Abstract

Written by Bichurin,the founder of Russian Sinology,Chinese Gramma was published for the use of teaching Chinese language in Kiakhta Chinese-teaching School in 1835.This book is composed of four parts,including Preface,Chapter One,Chapter Two and Appendix.Preface introduces the origin of Chinese Characters,those books on Chinese grammar written by foreigners before Bechurin and the origin of this book.Chapter one is entitled Basic Knowledge on Chinese Language and Characters,and Chapter two Grammar Rules of Chinese Language.In Appendix,Bichurin introduced Chinese strocks,Chinese radicals,phonetic symbols in Russian,French,Portuguese and English,Chinese numerals and personal pronouns used in modest way.Since its publication,Chinese Gramma has continuously played an important role in Chinese language teaching in Russia during the 19th century.
