Abstract
Objective To investigate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome, and to analysis the clustering characteristics of metabolic syndrome components in different gender. Methods Data of 20 502 residents from two towns of Tongzhou were collected, which contained 6 997 males and 13 505 females.Factor analysis method was used to analyze the following metabolic syndrome components:systolic and diastolic pressure, body mass index, waist circumference, total cholesterol, triglycerides, high density lipoprotein and fasting glucose. Results The crude prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 16.75%,the crude prevalence in female (19.46%) was significantly higher than in male (11.52%).The standardized prevalence was 10.74% (10.35% in male,11.16% in female). The WC,SBP,DBP was significantly higher in male than in female, but the BMI,TC,HDL-C,FPG was significantly higher in female than in male.Factor analyses revealed four factors in both two groups, including obesity, blood pressure, lipid and fasting glucose, and the cumulative variance contribution rates was 80.898% in male and 78.347% in female. The metabolic syndrome components were similar, but it still had some differences.Obesity was the most important factor;blood pressure factor was an independent factor. Conclusion Metabolic syndrome is the association of multiple factors. In our study, obesity and blood pressure factor are the main factors in both gender, but there are some differences between male and female.
