Causes and management of early urinary retention after transurethral resection of the prostate

Objective To study the causes and treatments of early urinary retention after transurethral resection of the prostate(TURP).Methods Clinical data of 20 patients with urinary retention after TURP were analyzed retrospectively.Results All patients had urinary retention when the catheter was removed.One case was treated with TURP for the second time while others were treated with indwelling catheter and/or alpha-1 adrenergic receptor antagonist(tamsulosin).The patients had satisfactory voiding after removal of the catheter by the above management.The follow-up time was 6～18 months and all the patients urinate normally.Conclusion The main causes of early urinary retention after TURP include bladder neck edema,spasm and adenomatous remnant.Indwelling catheter and taking alpha-1 adrenergic receptor antagonist have reliant curative effects.
