Abstract

After the Opium War, some men of insight in China began to search for ways of rescuing China. Of which the May 4th New Culture Movement was a vital part. They thought that the basic way to modernization was the establishment of democracy. This, in turn, depended upon an intellectual enlightenment of human mind with science and democracy. The shaking effect of the May 4th Movement upon the Chinese, and its historical significance, surpassed those of all other social reforms in China's history.
