Abstract
Objective To compare the ability of Viscoat and sodium hyaluronate to protec the corneal endothelium during endocapsular phacoemulsification and foldable intraocular lens implantation. Methods In 68 eyes of 49 senile cataract patients undergoing endocapular phacoemulsification with foldable intraocular lens implantation,In 34 eyes of 25 patients with sodium hyaluronate,in 34 eyes of 24 patients with Viscoat. One ophthalmologist performed all surgery. The endothelial cell density were measured in one week pre operation and two week postoperation. Results There were no statistically significant differences between two groups in age, cataract density,or phacoemulsification time during operation( P 0 05).There was statistically significant differences to compare before an after surgery for endothelial cell density in the sodium hyaluronate group( P 0 05).There was no significant differences to compare before and after surgery for endothelial cell density,it lose 9% in the Viscoat group( P 0 05).Conclusions Viscoat and sodium hyaluronate comparable in their ability to protect the corneal endothelium during phacoemulsication, this study suggested the Viscoat better than sodium hyaluronate for protect corneal endothelial cell.
