Analysis on the Distribution and Movement of Suspended Sediment at Yangshan Deep-water Harbor in Shanghai

Abstract

Based on the observation data of suspended sediment concentration since 1998, using the remote sensing image from 1996 to 2007, the distribution and movement tendency of suspended sediment and the influence of sediment movement in the Yangtze Estuary are analyzed. The results shows: (1) there is seasonal, temporal and spatial change at the distribution of suspended sediment concentration; (2) the change of suspended sediment concentration are controlled by tidal range; (3) suspended sediment concentration of Yangshan sea area obviously is higher than that of surrounding, taking on rising tendency from north to south and from east to west; (3) it’s proposed that sediment from the Yangtze Estuary will not affect the sea area of Yangshan Deep-water Harbor directly. On the other hand, strait-channel effect is an important factor to arouse high concentration suspended sediment in the sea area of Yangshan.
