Abstract

65% solid content styrene/butylacrylate/acrylic acid(St/BA/AA) emulsions were synthesized by the method of pre-emulsified semi-continuous emulsion polymerization. The effects of content of emulsifier, solid content, composition of monomers and functional monomer on the particle size, as well as particle size distribution of polymer latex were investigated, The micro-morphology of the latex particle was also characterized by TEM. The results show that an increase in the content of emulsifier, initiator and functional monomer gets latex with smaller particle and more narrow particle size distribution. The latex with bigger particle size and wider particle distribution was obtained with the increase of the content of solid and BA, as well as the increase of temperature. The average particle size is within 150 nm~500 nm, and the particle size distribution indexes within 1.06~2.5 for high solid content latex.
