Abstract

Objective To investigate the relationships between the plasma homocysteine( Hcy) and uric acid( UA) with cerebral infarction combined with carotid atherosclerosis. Methods A total of 238 patients with acute cerebral infarction admitted during April 2013 and February 2014 were selected, and were divided into normal carotid group( group A,n = 39),carotid atherosclerosis group( group B,n = 56) and carotid atherosclerosis plaques group( group C,n = 143) according to carotid ultrasound examination results. Hcy and UA levels in the three groups were detected, and the correlation with carotid atherosclerosis were also analyzed. Results Hcy level had significantly positive correlation with UA level in patients with cerebral infarction( r = 0. 576,P 0. 05). Hcy and UA levels of group C were higher than those of group A and B,and the levels of group B were higher than those of group A( P 0. 05). Conclusion High concentrations of Hcy and UA are independent risk factors of cerebral infarction combined with carotid atherosclerosis, which may play a part in carotid atherosclerosis and plaque formation.
