Abstract
The concept of markedness has developed into one of the important theories in linguistics since it appeared in 1930s.It also has been applied to such fields as phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, typology, semiotics, and language acquisition. This paper explores the definition of markedness, its application, criterion, and role in language acquisition.
