Endoscopic sinus surgery for choanal polyps

Objective:To investigate diagnosis of choanal polyps(CP) and to analyze the outcome of endoscopic sinus surgery(ESS) in patients with CP.Methods:The clinical data of 56 patients with CP underwent ESS from 1998 to 2008 were studied retrospectively.Results:Among 56 cases with CP,50 cases originated from the cyst or polyp in sinus(among them,46 cases from maxillary sinus,2 cases from anterior ethmoid,1 case from posterior ethmoid sinus and 1 from sphenoid sinus).2 cases from nasal fontaneles,2 cases and 2 cases from middle turbinate and nasal septun.All cases were treated by complete excision of the CP.During follow-up 1 to 3 years,2 cases were recurred,who were cured undergoing a second operation.Conclusion:Endoscopic surgery is mini-invasive,safe and effective in treatment of CP and completes removal of CP root that can effectively reduce the recurrence.
