Abstract
Objective To study the correlation between cognitive function and MRI measurements of hippocampus and temporal horn of lateral ventricle in AD patients. Methods There were 31 mild-moderate AD patients and 30 normal controls in the study.Neuropsychological examinations were conducted, including MMSE,ADL,POD,FOM,RVR,DS and BD.Volumetric measurement of hippocampal formations(HF)and measurement of width of the temporal horn were conducted with MRI.Results Both the volume of HF and width of the temporal horn showed significant differences between the AD patients and the control subjects(P0.01).The volume of HF and width of the temporal horn were found to correlate significantly with scores of MMSE,ADL,POD and FOM,but not correlate with scores of DS and BD.Especially MMSE and FOM were closely correlated with the volume of HF in the mild-moderate AD.Conclusion The brain structural measurement using MRI was found to correlate significantly with cognitive assessment.
