Abstract
Objective:To investigate the clinical significance of promoter methylation of P16 gene in gastric cancer. Methods: The methylation status of P16 on surgically removed tumour tissues were examined by methylation-specific polymerase chain reaction(MSP) in 37 cases with gastric cancer. Results: Among samples obtained from patients with gastric cancer, methylation was observed in both the cancerous and paracancerous tissues with 29.7% and 2.7% for P16 respectively. No significant correlation between methylation status of P16 and clinical pathological characteristic was observed. Conclusion: Methylation of P16 gene is likely to be cancer specific(P0.05),and may be utilized as a molecular diagnostic marker of gastric cancer in its early stage.
