Abstract

Objective:To determine the neuronal degeneration in the inner nuclear layer of RCS rat.Methods:The retinal tissue were collected from RCS rats with ages ranged from 18,20,28,35,42,45,56,60,70 to 100 days.The retinas of normal age\|matched SD rats served as control.Immunohistochemical method was applied to label horizontal cell,rod bipolar cells and amacrine cell by using antiserum of calbindin,PKCα and calretinin,respectively.Morphometric study was also performed.Results:Comparing with normal SD rat retinas,retinal degeneration,including outer and inner nuclear layers,was observed in RCS rat retina after postnatal 18-20 day.Morphometric study showed that there was loss of horizontal cells after postnatal 60 days,loss of rod bipolar cells after 20 days,and loss of amacrine cells after 20-35 day in the inner nuclear layer of RCS rats.Conclusions:Our results indicated that there is neuronal degeneration in the inner retina of RCS rat.Transneuronal degeneration may be the mechanism.
