Abstract

Based on the triaxial tests of intact and reconstituted loess with varying water content, the paper studied the suction, deformation and strength characteristics of loess. From the direct measurements of suction,it is concluded that the suction of unsaturated loess increases with the strain during the triaxial shear process, and the suction magnitudes and variation characteristics of intact and reconstituted loess turn out to be approximately the same.In isotropic consolidation process the volumetric strain differences between intact and reconstituted loess are smaller than that between intact and saturated intact loess. In the strength parameters of loess, cohesion is greatly influenced by water content and disturbance, while the angle of internal friction remains relatively stable. The soil structure is influenced more significantly by water content of loess than disturbance.
