Abstract
The study of Indian literature in English started early yet matured late.It experienced a brewing time from the commencement of Indian literature in English in 1793 to 1970s,during which scholars mainly focus on the similarity of expression between Indian literature in English and English literature.With the impetus of postcolonial theory,the study of Indian literature in English made rapid progress in1980 sand 1990s.In the 21 st century,Indian literature in English stepped into academic course in American universities,relevant research institutions were set up,scope of the study has extended from novels to other genres,and new theoretical stances were assumed.
