Abstract
Aim: To measured the levels of CXCL-5 in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and peripheral blood in children with acute bacterial meningitis. Methods: CSF and peripheral sera were taken from 34 children with acute bacterial meningitis and 24 healthy controls, and CXCL-5 was measured using ELISA method. CXCL-5 in CSF and sera was also detected in these patients after receiving antibiotic treatment. Results: The levels of CXCL-5 in the CSF and sera in children with acute bacterial meningitis were higher than those of healthy controls (P0.001),and decreased significantly after receiving antibiotic treatment (P0.001). Conclusion: CXCL-5 is probably associated with the recruitment of neutrophils into the central nervous system, and plays an important role in the development of meningitis.
