Abstract
OBJECTIVE:To investigate the preventive efficacy of periconceptional folic acid supplementation against neural tube defects. METHODS:The data of the pregnant women receiving filed and examined in our hospital from 2004 to Sept. 2013were retrospectively analyzed and summarized. The perinatal babies and those with neural tube defects delivered at different time period were assigned to either control group(2004—2008)or observation group(2009—Sept. 2013),with the preventive efficacy of folic acid supplementation against neural tube defects evaluated through contrast analysis of the related data in the two groups. RESULTS:9 cases in the control group versus 2 cases in the observation group presented with neural tube defects, and the differences between the two groups were statistically significant(P0.05). CONCLUSIONS:Periconceptional folic acid supplementation is of great importance for prevention of neural tube defects. It is important to emphasize the propaganda of folic acid supplementation in women of reproductive age.
