Abstract

Negotiation of meaning has been a key research field in second language acquisition for thirty years abroad.Research on negotiation of meaning has gone through three stages: categorization of negotiation of meaning from 1980 to 1984;a tentative theorization of negotiation of meaning from 1985 to 1995;a revised theorization of negotiation of meaning from 1996 to present.The current paper offers a review of the research on negotiation of meaning in terms of its three developmental stages.The paper also provides some suggestions for future research on negotiation of meaning.
