Abstract
The research, made possible by methods of literatures consultation, statistical analysis, comparative study and other methods, put under investigation of 64 matches performed by the first 8 handball teams in the 29th Olympic Games.Hopefully, this complete and incisive analysis of all teams′ performance shed the light on performance characteristics of modern handball and lay bare its developing tendency. The results expose a variety of factors underlying overall performance. They are,by name, athletes′ age and fitness features, key players, techniques of goalkeepers, the balanced improvement of offensive and defensive tactics as well as its proper practice. What feature most of top-level teams are the smooth transfer from offensive into defensive in techniques and tactics. It is concluded by the research that an attack, however powerful it might be not make up the loss incurred by poor defensive formation. This fact has been further confirmed by the defeat of Russia and S.Korea and an early knock-out of France before it could make it into the first 4,despite that France made more attacks than any other team.It becomes self-evident that the defensive set-up holds considerable sway over matches.Only balanced and joint improvement of offense and defense can give a final say to a match.
