Abstract

Objective To investigate the clinical characteristics, treatment approaches for chestnut thorn foreign bodies in eyes. Methods 140 cases with chestnut thorn foreign bodies in eyes were studied retrospectively, according to where the chestnut thorn lied and how long they had been in the eyes.Different surgical methods were used to remove the foreign bodies. For example, extraction of foreign body in deep layer of cornea;extraction of intraocular foreign body through cornea incision and sclerotomy;extraction of anterior chamber foreign body with viscoelastics;extraction of foreign body through phacoemulsification combining with implantation of intraocular lens;extraction of foreign body through iris reoditor. Results All anterior segment foreign bodies were successfully removed.Visual acuity was improved in different degree in 91 cases(65%) and unchanged in 49 cases(35%),none of the case showed the visual acuity decreased. Conclusions Anterior segment intraocular foreign body is likely to induce severe infection;successful management to remove foreign bodies thoroughly from the eyes is the key point for prevention.
