OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of Shengmai injection (SMI) on the drug metabolizing enzyme of liver in mice.METHODS Mice were given SMI( 7.5, 1 5mL·kg -1,ip), half an hour later, hypnotic effects of pentobarbital sodium or barbital sodium were observed. After given with SMI for six days, the hypnotic effect of pentobarbital sodium, liver index and the total contents of microsomal cytochrome P450(CYP) were examined at the last administration 24h later.RESULTS When given only once, SMI at higher dose prolonged markedly hypnotic duration of pentobarbital sodium (P 0.01), and yet it hardly influenced the hypnotic effect of barbital sodium. When given for six days, the reduction of hypnotic duration of pentobarbital sodium, and the increases of liver index and total content of liver CYP were found in two SMI groups (P 0.05, P 0.01).CONCLUSION SMI could inhibit or induce drug metabolizing enzyme of liver, which would be related to the period of administration and the time of experimental observation.
