Abstract
In this paper, the author presents a general description of the current teaching and learning of English vocabulary in colleges and universities in China including the existing problems as well as students' vocabulary size. Vocabulary teaching is to a certain degree neglected in the practical college English teaching and the students' command of new words can hardly satisfy the requirements prescribed by the College English Teaching Syllabus. Causes of the reality are explored and four strategies are suggested in the paper in order for teachers to improve their teaching of vocabulary and for students to increase their efficiency in English vocabulary learning.
