Abstract

Based on a multiscale view and using the total population in the urban built-up area as the index of urban size of Hubei Province,by the rank-size law,size-frequency law and fractal theory, the results include the following several aspects. Firstly, using the total population in the urban built-up area as the index of urban size,rank-size law can describe the city system's organization of Hubei Province in 1980~1998, but it is not the optimal model.Secondly, the general decrease of the score of fractal and capacity of structure, though it changes fluctuantly, displays that the urban population is increasing and the urban system's distribution is more and more even.Thirdly,in different time and size, the landscape structure of urban system of Hubei Province has the features as follows:inordinate increase, double modality and multimodality,at the same time, the interval of each modalityis different obviously in different time.Lastly,in the space distribution, the urban system of Hubei Province is along the transportation lines and in the plain.
