Minimally Invasive Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy for Treatment of Upper Urinary Tract Calculi in Obese Patients

Abstract

Objective:To observe the efficacy and safety of minimally invasive percutaneous nephrolithotomy for treatment of upper urinary tract calculi in obese patients.Methods: we retrospective analyzed 31 obese patients(degrees I and II) with upper urinary tract calculi registered in our hospital between October 2004 and October 2005.These patients comprised 7 cases of upper ureteral calculi(mean stone size=(2.1±0.2)cm,complicated with 4.5 cm hydronehprosis),11 of solitary pelvic calculi,10 of multiple renal calculi and 3 of staghorn renal calculi (21 of unilateral and 3 of bilateral renal calculi,mean stone size=(3.5±0.5)cm).All patients were treated with minimally invasive percutaneous nephrolithotomy.Results: The mean hospital stay was(8±3)days,mean operative duration was(1.5±0.4)hours,and the stone-free rate was 98% for the upper ureteral calculi and 89.6% for the renal calculi.No injuries to the pleura and bowels or other complications were observed,nor was massive hemorrhage after operation.Conclusion: the upper urinary tract calculi in obese patients treated with minimally invasive percutaneous nephrolithotomy appeared to be effective,safe and with high stone-free rate.
