Abstract

Optical transmission is getting more popular in the access network due to the increasing demand for bandwidth.The most advertised transport solutions for the optical access are Passive Optical Network(PON).Gigabit-capable Passive Optical Network(GPON) is the most advertised one in the PON technology.The paper introduces the progress of PON briefly,then puts emphasis on the introduction for the progress and technical character of GPON.The introduction mainly lies on four aspects:evolving background,system architecture,contrast to the EPON,and the status quo for the GPON development domestic and abroad.Finally,predicts the trend for GPON development.
