Communication Barriers between Taiwan and Mainland China and their Solutions

Based on the analyses of Lian Zhan's visit to a primary school in Xi'an in 2005 and Chen Guangbiao's charity tour to Taiwan in 2011,this research paper examines the cultural causes of ineffective communication of goodwill between Taiwan and Mainland from perspectives of language and expression.The research's findings are as follows:Mainland focuses on the long-term national benefit,while Taiwan emphasizes its immediate interest;Mainland is more direct in expressing their hospitality,while Taiwan is comparatively indirect and pays more attention to the etiquette.The paper further points out that the Japanese culture and the influence of western civilization on Taiwan are,to certain extent,the main reasons for the different culture orientation and value between Taiwan and Mainland.Finally,the paper recommends When in Roman,do as Romans do as well as strengthening the national cultural identity so as to build better cross-strait relations.
