Effect of Molecular Weight on Pin-Disc Friction and Wear Behaviors of UHMWPE under Dry Friction

Abstract

Friction and wear behaviors of UHMWPE with a molecular weight of 2 million,3 million,5 million and 9 million were investigated respectively against steel at 60 % RH(relative humidity) and 20 ℃ with a pin-disc tribometer under dry friction.The contact between polymer discs and steel pins rubbing pairs took the form of plane/plane with normal load of(392±29) N,rotational speed of 60 r/min and testing time of 1.5 h.In order to investigate wear mechanism,photographies of worn surfaces were observed by SEM.The results showed that influences of molecular weight were obvious on friction and wear characteristics of UHMWPE.It was further demonstrated that the lowest friction coefficient of rubbing pair and the minimum wear of UHMWPE itself appeared in the case of 3 million.
