Abstract
Objective To investigate the role of abnormal expression of P53 and P21 proteins in the oncogenesis and development of gastric carcinoma. Methods P53 and P21 protein expression were measured by immunohistochemistry in 58 gastric carcinomas and corresponding adjacent tissues. Results P53 immunoreactivity was detected in 50 of 58 gastric carcinomas, but not in the 58 corresponding adjacent normal tissues. The difference was significant between the two groups (P=0.000). P21 immunoreactivity was detected in 36 of 58 gastric carcinomas, and in 52 of 58 corresponding adjacent normal tissues. The difference was also significant (χ~2=12.5,P0.01). The co-expression positive rate of P21 and P53 in gastric carcinoma tissues was 56.9%. But there was no significant correlation between P21 and P53 expression (χ~2=1.323,r=0.203,P0.05). Conclusion The abnormal expression of P53 and P21 proteins is related with the oncogenesis of gastric carcinoma.
