Abstract
Objective To produce canine models of lateral, bifurcation and terminal arterial aneurysms. Methods 25 dogs were manipulated under general anesthesia. The bilateral common carotid arteries were rebuilt to be bifurcation and terminal forms.Anastomosing venous pouches onto rebuilt arteries produced 10 bifurcation aneurysms and 10 terminal aneurysms; Anastomosing venous pouches onto lateral sides of arteries constructed 18 lateral aneurysms. The experimental aneurysms were evaluated by digital subtraction angiography (DSA) after 2 3 weeks. Results One animal died of over dosed anesthesia.Another died from rupture of a terminal aneurysm.DSA was performed on the other 23 animals, which showed that 1 bifurcation aneurysm and its parent arteries were thormbosed,3 lateral aneurysms occluded spontaneously, and one terminal aneurysm ruptured to form pseudoaneurysm 3 weeks after operation. Successful 13 lateral aneurysms,9 bifurcation aneurysms and 8 terminal aneurysms were obtained. Conclusions The successful rate of animal models of aneurysms in our group is high, coming up to 79% with fewer complications and they could imitate the hemodynamic characteristics of real intracranial aneurysms except fusiform aneurysms. The following embolization has verified the availablity of these aneurysm models.
