Abstract
Objective To observe the protective effect of astragalus membranaceus on the kidney of diabetic rats, and to study its possible mechanisms. Methods A rat model of diabetes was established by the use of streptozotocin(STZ). 12 weeks after the establishment, the changes of urinary albumin excretion,Ccr,ET-1 level of blood and urinary, serum and urinary TGF-β1 concentration, average volume of glomerulus and average thickness of glomerular basement membrane were measured. Results Urinary albumin excretion,Ccr,average volume of glomerulus and thickness of glomerular basement membrane decreased obviously and urinary ET-1 and TGF-β1 were lowered at different levels in the diabetic rats treated with astragalus membranaceus. Conclusion Astragalus membranaceus can delay the structural and functional damage in the kidney of STZ-induced diabetic rats, which may be associated with the suppression of ET-1 and TGF-β1.
