Survey of treatment and medical assistance of advanced schistosomiasis cases in China.

Aim To analyze the status of treatment and medical assistance for patients with advanced schistosomiasis. Methods The data concerning treatment and medical assistance of advanced schistosomiasis were collected through disease statistics review,hospital survey,case history examination and interview. Results The treatment coverage of advanced schistosomiasis increased by 1.5 times form Year 2001 (27.96%)to Year 2008 (70.67%). But the proportion of advanced schistosomiasis in the schistosomiasis patients also increased by 1.3 times form Year 2001(3.13%)to Year 2008(7.27%). The quantity of new detected cases maintained,without apparent reduction,between 2 100 and 3 000. Treatment and medical assistance were organized by the health departments at all levels. The advanced schistosomiasis cases were timely treated through implementation of technical management,including checking the medical assistance cases and designating hospitals.. Conclusion The effect of treatment and medical assistance of advanced schistosomiasis is significant. The economic burden and physical suffering of patients were relieved. In the future,the treatment coverage should be increased,the patients would be followed up,and the mechanisms for long-term assistance may be explored.
