Abstract

GLACIAL AND INTERGLACIAL UNITS OF THE PLEISTOCENE IN THE HOLY CROSS MTS Summary Modern studies of Pleistocene of the Holy Cross Mts. region, initiated by J. Czarnocki and J. Samsonowicz (8) and afterwards continued by them as well as numerous outstanding geologists, geomorphologists, paleobotanists, paleozoologists, paleopedologists and archaeologists (cf. 21) resulted in a discovery and investigations of many new sections of interglacial sediments (Figs. l, 2). These sections formed the foundations for the opinion (Figs. 2, 3) on possible advance of the Narew Glaciation into this area, subdivision of the South Polish Glaciation into three separate ones (Nida, San l and San 2 glaciations) with Malopolska and Ferdynandow interglacials between them, subdivision of the Great Interglacial into two ones (Mazovian and Zbojno interglacials) separated by the Liwiec Glaciation, subdivision of the Middle Polish Glaciation into two separate ones (Odra and Warta glaciations) with the Lubawa Interglacial between them. Besides the biostratigraphic criieria, the age of most interglacial and glacial units was defined by FCl/P or TL methods, and the received data enabled a preliminary evaluation of their duration (Fig. 3) and attempt to refer them to 180 stages recorded in Pleistocene deep-sea sediments (Fig. 4). A chronostratigraphic scheme of the author (22) for the Pleistocene of Poland has been derived from the Holy Cross Mts. region and created a connection in correlation of main glacial and interglacial units of the Quaternary of eastern and western Europe (cf. 30, 56).
