Abstract

Summary. In the sediment samples taken from the Bydgoszcz Canal the content of As, Ba, Cr, Hg, Pb, Co, Cu, Ni, Sn and Zn were determined by ICP-OES and CV-AAS methods and the content of organic carbon by coulometric titration. The maximum detected contents were: mercury 0.575 mg/kg, arsenic 17 mg/kg, barium 126 mg/kg, chromium 309 mg/kg tin, 15 mg/kg, zinc 742 mg/kg, cobalt 4 mg/kg, copper 80 mg/kg, nickel 39 mg/kg and lead 53 mg/kg. It was estimated that in the bed of the Canal for a distance of approximately 5 500 m was deposited around 66 000 m 3 sediments. In about 15 000 m 3 sediment accumulated at the sluice Okole found to exceed permissible levels of cadmium and chromium.
