Study on overweight,obesity and chronic diseases among residents in Chongqing City

Objective To investigate the epidemiological characteristics of overweight and obesity,as well as to evalute their relationship with chronic diseases.Methods A stratified multi-stage cluster sampling method was used for the investigation in Chongqin city.Background information was collected by face-to-face interview.Data of weight and height were obtained through physical exam.Results 59 264 respondents were valid for the study.The average value of BMI was(21.82±2.80) kg/m2 and the proportion of overweight and obesity were 14.30% and 1.83%,respectively.The proportion of overweight and obesity in female(14.83% and 2.07%) were significantly higher than that in male(13.70% and 1.57%).The proportion of overweight and obesity were both the lowest among the people of age group 18～24 and increased with age for population over 24 years old.The proportion of overweight and obesity were the highest(24.62% and 3.48%) among the people of age group 65～years or over.The prevalence of hypertension,diabetes,stroke and hyperlipidemia were significant higher in the group of overweight and obesity than that in the group of normal BMI.Conclusion The prevalence of overweight and obesity were high and associated with the condition of chronic diseases in Chongqing residents,especially senior population.
